My Favourite Festival - Diwali

Diwali is the festival of lights. It is the most popular festival and it is celebrated by all the people across the country. Diwali usually comes in the month of October or November. Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. People clean and white-wash their houses. They buy new clothes. Children buy crackers. The women folk prepare sweets and other special Diwali delicacies.

On the day of Diwali, women draw colourful and attractive rangoli designs. The doors are decorated with festoons made of marigold flowers and the leaves of the Ashoka tree. At night there are rows of earthen lamps in every house. Children burst crackers. On this day the businessmen perform the chopda poojan. Every shop is decorated with colourful lights and festoons. The New Year is also celebrated the next day with great joy. People wear new clothes, go the temples and visit their friends and relatives. They wish one another a Happy New Year.
